The Land of Elsewhere

The leading essay

A treaty redraws a country, but the people who live beside the line continue to misplace their loyalties in smaller, more durable ways.

Elsewhere, elsewhere

OTHER MATTERS REQUIRING YOUR UNDIVIDED DISBELIEF

Criticism of impossible things

A review of The Country Takes Possession, a work in which a schooner, a brass plate, and one increasingly doubtful audience attempt to own a horizon.

A miniature schooner crosses a painted stage as a clerk holds a dripping inventory and a child offers a chipped cup.

Letters from elsewhere

A correspondent writes from a town of emptied rooms, where remembering someone has become a practical task performed with pockets, thread, and restraint.

A blue four-holed button sewn inside a coat sleeve beside a folded letter and a cold enamel kettle.

Marginalia

A note on the moon’s invoice

The earlier article on the moon’s municipal salary treats procedure as a comic nuisance, but its receipt deserves a second reading. The moon does not merely demand payment; it supplies an account of labour so old that the town’s categories become the absurd part. Perhaps the question is not whether celestial work can be salaried, but why human work must first become legible to a stapler.

Thursday and the problem of inheritance

The claim that Thursday may be common property is persuasive only until one asks who is expected to maintain it. The article’s executor postpones planning, which is sensible, though postponement is often how private ownership puts on a cardigan and calls itself patience. A day shared by everyone still contains somebody’s exhausted afternoon.

A compass is not a witness

The missing sense of direction is advertised as though it were property, then recovered as a civic right. This is a generous conclusion, but the earlier notice leaves one question in the margin: may a person be lost without eventually becoming evidence for someone else’s map? The Bureau’s certification is not quite rescue. It is paperwork with a hat.

The cabinet of curiosities

The Purple Underside of the Boundary Post

At the March & Crown Exchange, residents paint the visible halves of boundary posts in their preferred colours, then leave the buried portions unpainted. On the first market day of autumn, neighbours gather with spoons and carefully expose one post. Its underground wood has turned purple from rain, soil, and the meeting of pigments. The discovery is marked by sharing bread across the line. No official body recognises the custom, which is generally how it has survived.
