At the March & Crown Exchange, a purple boundary and an exhausted inspector suggest that belonging may begin where official attention stops.

The moon’s unpaid remainder
The earlier article treats the moon’s receipt as a procedural joke, but its demand has a quieter consequence. If night becomes salaried, it becomes measurable, and what is measurable soon acquires expectations. The moon may receive its municipal salary, but the town will eventually ask whether it has taken leave. The invoice is not absurd because it requests payment. It is absurd because payment might make the ancient body employable.
The border beneath the border
The leading essay’s purple posts are persuasive as an image of belonging, though one wonders what happens to those who cannot reach the shared bread. The buried colour offers common ground, but access to it still requires tools, time, and neighbours willing to wait. A mixed identity is not automatically a generous one. Sometimes it is simply a place where several claims have agreed to remain inconvenient.
The child’s cup survives the horizon
The performance reviewed in the back catalogue ends with a child keeping a chipped cup after the water refuses possession. This is more than a charming refusal. The cup gives the child a relation to the disputed place that neither declaration nor inventory can provide. It is portable, inadequate, and useful. The horizon remains unconvinced, which is perhaps why the cup matters.

The Fourth Answer at March & Crown
Each autumn, Orra Venn prepares three explanations for the purple underside of a boundary post. One concerns mineral rain, one concerns pigments meeting in the wood, and one is an economical account of why people enjoy spoons. She keeps them written on blue cards beneath the counter. During the uncovering, however, neighbours are forbidden to ask what the purple means until the bread has been divided. By then the question has usually softened. Children press their fingers into the damp grain, adults argue about whose paint reached deepest, and Orra listens for a fourth answer in the pause before everyone begins eating. It has not yet arrived, which gives the custom room to continue.
